Cobalt is right about the data chain. The decision chain is a different problem.
Cobalt's own research describes the mechanics plainly — 'financial updates by email, associate copies data to spreadsheets, data copied again into reports for partners.' Cleaning up that chain is a real operational win. It does not, by itself, produce a governed record that connects the current state of the position back to the IC approval.
What Cobalt does well, and where the line is.
What Cobalt is built for
Portfolio data quality, benchmarking, and LP-facing analytics.
Cobalt's strength is getting clean portfolio data out of the email/spreadsheet chain and into a structured, benchmarkable form. The research library on data quality is some of the better public analysis on why monitoring tools feel harder to operate than their vendors promise.
What it is not built for
Holding the IC approval and evaluating its continued validity.
Data quality is necessary but not sufficient. Cobalt does not parse the IC memo into structured assumptions, does not hold the credit agreement as policy-as-code, and does not run a decision validity evaluation on top of the cleaned data. The cleanup makes the data trustable; the decision evaluation is a separate layer.
Where Capital Refinery sits next to it
Above the cleaned data, at the decision layer Cobalt does not target.
Capital Refinery takes the cleaned portfolio data (from Cobalt, from iLEVEL, from accounting) and binds it to the specific IC thesis assumptions it was meant to validate. That produces decision validity scoring and time-to-consequence ranking — the layer that evaluates whether the committee’s approval still holds.
Where the lines fall.
| Capability | Cobalt | Capital Refinery |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio data collection and cleanup | Strong — focused capability | Consumes cleaned data; not the primary surface |
| Peer benchmarking | Strong — reference library | Not the goal — thesis validity is the comparison |
| LP reporting analytics | Strong | Produces governed IC/board output |
| IC memo + thesis as structured data | No | Yes — bound at approval |
| Covenants as policies-as-code | No | Yes — credit decisions evaluated against the real agreement |
| Decision validity + time-to-consequence | No | Yes — the layer above the cleaned data |

Institutional readiness measurement
Cobalt solves portfolio data aggregation and reporting standardization for private capital. Capital Refinery operates a category Cobalt doesn’t: institutional readiness measurement on the operating business itself — graded against the same 10-axis framework that buy-side ICs, lender credit committees, and LPs use to evaluate. The artifact carries a deterministic fingerprint and a public verification URL.
The two product surfaces don’t compete — they operate at different layers of the stack. Cobalt handles data aggregation; Capital Refinery handles structural readiness measurement and decision integrity. See institutional readiness and the same-engine architecture for the dimension Cobalt doesn’t address.
Clean data is the floor. Governed decisions are the ceiling.
If your firm already uses Cobalt, the next question is what governs the thesis behind the cleaned numbers. Bring us a deal — we'll show you decision validity on the real data.
Keep Cobalt if you need portfolio data quality and reconciliation. Use Capital Refinery when you need a neutral, evidence-backed readiness artifact that shows what will survive institutional review.
Capital Refinery is the institutional measurement layer. It does not replace Cobalt; it sits next to it. The decision to engage is a routing decision, not a swap.
